Victoria Makerspace’s “Beginning Arduino” Course

Offered at the Victoria Makerspace, this course provides hands-on working with the Arduino processor (the Leonardo) as well as an assortment of electronics parts. The goal is to get students using the Arduino for simple tasks, and helping them know where to find further information as they expand their projects.

All students are provided a guide with detailed information from the course; as well, they are supplied with an Arduino Experimenter’s Kit during the course that they can optionally purchase afterwards (approximately $25).

Course goals:

  • Understanding the program editor (IDE), including installing, running, and using it to send programs to the Arduino and receive back information via the Serial line.
  • Simple programming, both using the built-in example programs and modifying programs for your specific needs.
  • Bread-boarding and connecting circuits to the Arduino safely and correctly.
  • How to make circuits and work with devices like switches, lighting (LEDs), potentiometers, and speakers.
  • Basic electronic concepts like Current, Voltage, Resistance and how they tie together and relate to the Arduino.
  • Specific Arduino-related topics like pulse width modulation (PWM) for motor/light control, and circuit ‘floating’, among other things.
  • As time permits, discussion of more advanced topics like motor control.

Course is approximately 3 hours.
