WordPress 2.3 BETA Now Released

Not intended for prime time (hence the ‘beta’ designation), WP 2.3 was just released overnight.

Preliminary thoughts: Huge changes to the code since 2.22 (expected of course). I haven’t the time right now to go through the code, but obviously there’s changes ‘aplenty’.

As well, there’s not much different in the Admin section – in fact, the only thing I noticed was an addition to the permalinks section to add an optional ‘tag base’ (tags will be integrated in the next release.

Still, I’m all a-twitter – according to their site some of the new features include:

Some of the features of 2.3 include plugin and core update notification, built-in tags support, faster javascript, and SEO-friendly URL redirection.

I’m looking forward to more details soon…

New Design for ‘Utopia Mechanicus’

Time for an site overhaul!

The new design is modeled after Fritz Lang’s 1927 classic, ‘Metropolis’, using the font for the header, b/w (and gray) coloring, and movie stills.

It seemed appropriate: since ‘Utopia Mechanicus’ is a site devoted to software and tech for the betterment of mankind (lofty goal, but it IS code bits and pieces I write to make life easier for at least one person, myself), what better design than something that reminds us of how bad technology can become?

It’s actually somewhat ironic – technology can help us, but in 1927 we hadn’t even gotten into the worst of it – synthetic chemicals, nuclear weapons, global warming – and yet THEY were concerned about the misuse of technology!

Hope you enjoy it.
